when I'm going to be working with this software I always do a full cleanup to ensure all system resources are maximised. For my main catalog (approx 40,000 photos) even this new version can be frustratingly slow - doesn't happen all the time, but my hopes had been raised by the initial experience so this came as a disappointment.īefore anyone tells me about my system memory, etc. The 2020 version has seen a speed increase of sorts but it depends on the size of the catalog you're dealing with. The earlier version was notoriously slow at updating information in a photo when, for example, you added the name of a person. The one and only improvement as far as I can see, and it had been commented on in the review, was with the Organizer. Unfortunately, I now have to say I strongly disagree with the reviewer as there is nothing substantially different from the 2018 version I had been using in terms of the Editor. I bought this version on the strength of an independent review on the internet and was so looking forward to the benefits that were going to be coming my way. Or if you are just getting into photo editing, PSE 2020 is probably the best entry point to start learning (lots of free learning material on YouTube) But if you are looking to stick with PSE upgrading from an older version, it’s worth it.

If you don’t have a DVD drive it may be worth you still picking up the DVD version just for the code as at the time of this review it’s cheaper than a download code. I didn’t even have to take the DVD out of its sleeve. So, with that in mind, I bought the retail DVD and used the code to unlock the trial version. My laptop is a dual core/4 thread i7, 8GB RAM and 1GB Nvidia graphics. The other offerings had my laptop running at 100% utilisation in a lot of instances which is something I want to avoid due to the noise and heat. PSE 2020 had the most basic feature set but it was the most stable software and more importantly for me, the most optimised for older hardware. I tried trial versions of software by Corel, Affinity and PSE 2020.
